Er wurde bei Baur in Stuttgart gefertigt. Das M im Namen steht f\u00fcr Motorsport.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Urspr\u00fcnglich war der BMW M1 f\u00fcr den Einsatz im Motorsport geplant, nur eine Homologationsserie sollte in kleiner Auflage f\u00fcr den \u00f6ffentlichen Stra\u00dfenverkehr gebaut werden. Durch \u00c4nderungen im internationalen Reglement noch vor seiner Pr\u00e4sentation erwies er sich als Rennfahrzeug jedoch praktisch als \u00fcberfl\u00fcssig. Er wurde, mit m\u00e4\u00dfigem Erfolg, noch als Rennwagen in diversen Serien eingesetzt.
