A new interpretation of masterpieces from art history. Classics “popped” and in a new light.
“Translated” into the language of the artist.
The pencil drawing of a “Standing Figure” was created in 1947. The study shows one of his characteristic themes, the elongated figure. The artist appropriated this repertoire of forms after the war and it subsequently determined his sculptures.
Drawing was always on an equal footing with Giacometti’s sculptural and painterly work: “Everything is drawing. A sculpture is a drawing in three-dimensional space. A painting is a drawing with colors. You could say, at least for me, that everything is just drawing.”
The original is in the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart, Graphische Sammlung, acquired in 1984 with Lotto funds.
